Roman Retiers

The Vision: two French ruins purchased by our client, the objective was to utilise them for family holiday accomodation.

The Materials: major structural works and rehabilitation was needed to both structures.  In the principal residence, the “longere”; the combination of stone and cob required horizontal restraint. To achieve this and provide a first floor suite we designed an open green oak frame to divide up the living space and create a reinforcing structure internally. A 2 year long project transformed the ruins into comfortable homes with all the modern conveniences. The staircase was one of the last items to install: a combination of a steel spar and tread brackets all clad in white oak, with built-in LED tread lights ensuring a safe route to bed after enjoying the fruits of French degustation.
